Olivia Colman doesn’t do runways, or at least she didn’t until Sunday. In Paris, the Oscar winner walked the Miu Miu SS27 show in a black leather skirt suit, a navy V-neck and flats, with her hair in a low ponytail. She was part of a cast that also included Emma Corrin, Jamie Bell, Noah Jupe, Gigi Hadid and Louisa Jacobson. For Cover Issue’s culture desk on Monday 5 October IST, Olivia Colman at Miu Miu SS27 is the celebrity-casting moment of Paris Fashion Week: an actor who once called her own fame “very embarrassing,” cast by Miuccia Prada in a collection she summed up in two words, according to WWD: “elegance to sports.”

Olivia Colman’s Miu Miu SS27 runway walk, look by look

Vogue’s Kerry McDermott reported the walk as it happened: Colman wore “a leather skirt suit, flats, and a chic low pony.” Dazed’s Isobel Van Dyke filled in the details: a V-neck sweater under the black leather skirt suit, with her “wispy hair pulled into a messy ponytail.” Our cover is Giovanni Giannoni’s runway photograph for WWD. It shows the look from the front, with a loose black leather jacket over a navy knit and a belted leather skirt to mid-calf, against the purple floor of the Palais d’Iéna.

The outfit works because it doesn’t look like a costume. It is close to what a stylish 52-year-old actor might actually wear to a premiere afterparty, in the same way Miu Miu’s best castings show the clothes on real characters rather than turning the actors into models.

Vogue placed the moment in context. Colman, a former British Vogue cover star, once called herself “weird and shy” in an interview with the magazine and has said she finds fame “very embarrassing.” Vogue also noted she had shown a new grey look earlier in the week while promoting her film Wicker at the Zurich Film Festival. So the walk was a surprise: an actor known for avoiding the fashion circuit, walking it for the label that has made actor-models its signature.

The cast: Emma Corrin, Jamie Bell, Gigi Hadid and more

Colman wasn’t the only actor on the runway. Across WWD, Vogue, Elle, W and Dazed, the cast list includes:

Emma Corrin, Colman’s co-star in Dolly Alderton’s Pride and Prejudice adaptation. Dazed notes that Corrin plays Lizzie Bennet this December, and Vogue points out Corrin is a Miu Miu regular after walking the fall 2023 show and fronting campaigns.

Jamie Bell, who made his runway debut, per Dazed. As Dazed put it, “no one expected to see Billy Elliot walk a Miu Miu show.” WWD describes the men in clinging raglan-sleeve activewear, zip cardigans and wool trousers.

Noah Jupe, star of Hamnet (Vogue, Dazed, WWD).

Gigi Hadid, who, according to Elle, wore a shiny pleated skirt with a backwards sports bra. Dazed notes she made her acting debut this year in Mindy Kaling’s Not Suitable for Work.

Louisa Jacobson, Meryl Streep’s daughter (WWD, Elle), and Ella Bleu Travolta (Vogue).

Igby Rigney, of The Shards (Elle, W, Dazed), Katherine Waterston (Dazed) and Chandler Kinney (WWD).

Dazed spotted the pattern. Last season Miuccia Prada cast Gillian Anderson, and this season she drew on “some of this year’s biggest film and TV moments.” The writer’s conclusion: “Mrs P is up to date with this year’s releases.”

Why Miu Miu keeps casting actors

Vogue calls the unexpected runway cameo “pretty much fashion week tradition at this point” and gives the credit to Miuccia Prada, recalling the fall 2012 Prada show where she cast Hollywood “villains” including Gary Oldman and Willem Dafoe. Asked about this season’s casting, Prada gave a characteristically short answer to WWD’s Miles Socha: “We try to do all — young, new faces and some older women, some men, some different characters.”

That “different characters” line explains the strategy. Miu Miu is selling the idea that the clothes belong to real women at any age, not one model type, and a 52-year-old Oscar winner in a leather skirt suit makes the point faster than a show note could. It also gives the collection a front-page moment on a weekend crowded with big shows.

What they wore: “elegance to sports”

The clothes gave the actors plenty to work with. WWD describes lace-front Wrangler jeans, colourful New Balance sneakers, retro athleticwear, a few pouf miniskirts “and kilts galore.” Most outfits combined swimwear bottoms, a warm-up jacket or cropped workout top, and something in checked wool, usually a boyish blazer and a pleated skirt worn low on the hips.

The show notes, quoted by Elle, set the question: “The reality of clothing today is this mix — sportswear, casual, normal. But how to make it more interesting, more rich?” Prada added that she had “never been so precise, or taken it so far.” W reports the collection was titled “Here and Now.” Immediately after the show, Prada told W: “It was the idea of being in the moment, in the time, and seeing everybody dressing in sportswear, and then I thought to lift up the sport; to bring elegance to the sport.”

W’s details include crystal-covered sports bras, 1960s-style jewelled silk minidresses, deliberately cracked suede, and shoelace-like strings tied around low waists and laced up the front of upcycled Wranglers (“I fell in love with the stringing,” Prada said). Those laces appear again on a reworked New Balance RC150 racing shoe. Dazed called the cast “sporty librarians,” with nerdy blazers and oversized glasses paired with tiny sports shorts.

The set: bleachers, purple floors and a tennis court

The setting matched the theme. W says the Palais d’Iéna was washed in royal purple, with chocolate-brown seats turned into makeshift bleachers. Dazed compared the white-lined purple floor to a tennis court, and WWD likened the seating to a local swimming pool or high-school gym, fitting for clothes WWD described as a mix of prom-night finery and what you might wear after volleyball practice.

The culture takeaway

For readers following celebrity style, there are three takeaways from Olivia Colman at Miu Miu SS27.

First, age is now part of the casting. Prada said so herself (“some older women”), and Colman, at 52, was the show’s headline name.

Second, the actors were cast for this year’s releases. Pride and Prejudice, Hamnet and Not Suitable for Work were all represented on the runway, which shows how closely fashion now tracks the film and TV calendar.

Third, the clothes are wearable. A leather skirt suit with flats is a look anyone can copy: keep the knit simple, the skirt below the knee, the shoes flat and the ponytail low.

The front row added its own star power. Bollywood’s Janhvi Kapoor attended in a look styled by Rhea Kapoor, covered separately on the Cover Issue style desk. For Paris SS27, the Miu Miu show is the one that turned a runway into the celebrity moment of the week, led by an actor who usually avoids them.
