It took a premiere in London to make it official. Florence Pugh and Finn Cole made their red carpet debut as a couple at the world premiere of Cole's new film, In the Shadows, at the 70th BFI London Film Festival on 9 October — and, as Vogue put it, they "didn't exactly opt for matchy-matchy dressing." Instead, Florence Pugh and Finn Cole on the red carpet offered a masterclass in complementary couple style: a romantic, sparkling Wiederhoeft gown on one side, a chocolate-brown Brioni suit on the other. Here is the full breakdown, with every credit, and what you can borrow from it.
The occasion: Finn Cole's premiere, Florence Pugh's support
According to E! News, Cole stars in In the Shadows as Richard Moore, the real-life husband of boxer Ramla Ali. Vogue notes that Pugh took a break from promoting East of Eden to support her boyfriend on his night, which is part of the charm of the look: she dressed up, but she did not try to upstage the film.
E! reports that the outing marks the pair's first joint red carpet appearance, following their Instagram debut earlier this year, when Pugh posted a photo from the Bulgari Eclettica High-End Collection launch in Milan on 31 March. In a Vanity Fair interview published in September and quoted by E!, Pugh said: "I don't want to be a secret, but I also don't want everything to be divulged." The red carpet, in other words, is the part they are choosing to share — and they shared it in style.
Florence Pugh's Wiederhoeft gown, decoded
Pugh wore a gown from Wiederhoeft's spring 2027 collection, styled by her longtime collaborator Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Vogue reports. E! describes the dress as a lavender corset top with a sparkling skirt, and the red carpet photographs show the details: a pale lilac corseted bodice with visible boning, a sweetheart neckline encrusted with silver embellishment, delicate halter straps and a sparkling column skirt that catches the light all the way to the floor.
Wiederhoeft, the New York label known for corsetry and bridal-adjacent romance, is a natural fit for the direction Pugh has been taking. Vogue describes her "particularly romantic streak of red-carpet dressing of late," with diaphanous silhouettes, sculptural bodices and romantic flourishes from Rodarte, Patrick McDowell and Vivienne Westwood across her East of Eden promotional run — "often tempered by the slightly rebellious beauty choices that have become something of her signature."
The jewellery and accessories
Vogue lists the full accessory edit. Pugh wore silver Aquazzura sandals, a Bulgari Wild Pop necklace and high-jewellery earrings, and "a constellation of delicate diamond piercings" by Maria Tash. E! adds that she chose silver peep-toe heels and statement diamonds around her neck and on her ears. The effect is cool-toned and cohesive: silver shoes, diamonds and a silver-embellished bodice, all sitting against that soft lavender.
Hair, makeup and nails
The beauty credits are just as specific. According to Vogue, hair was by Hyungsun Ju, in a bow-like half-up, half-down style; makeup was by Celia Burton, with a shimmering finish; and nails were by nail artist Dawn Sterling, known as Nailglam. In the photographs, the half-up section is pulled high and sculpted at the crown, while the rest of her blonde hair falls in loose, lived-in waves — romantic but not precious, which is exactly the balance Vogue's "slightly rebellious" line points to. Dark polish on her nails adds the final flick of edge against all that lilac.
Finn Cole's Brioni suit: brown is the new black tie
Cole stayed firmly in his own lane — and it is a good lane. Working with stylist Tom O'Dell, he wore a lightweight chocolate-brown double-breasted suit by Brioni, Vogue reports, with a striped cotton shirt and a brown wool-and-silk tie from the Italian house. A Cartier watch, a silver tie clip from his own collection and Grenson tassel loafers worn with white socks finished the look.
That last detail is the one menswear fans will screenshot. White socks with tassel loafers is a knowing, slightly preppy, slightly retro move that stops a serious suit from feeling stiff. And chocolate brown, rather than black or navy, is what makes the pairing work: it is warm enough to sit next to Pugh's pastel without clashing, and rich enough to look like evening.
Why the couple formula works
Vogue's verdict was that the effect was "cohesive without being coordinated" — she gravitated toward romance and embellishment, he favoured the clean lines and classic codes of menswear. That is the cleverest takeaway for anyone dressing as a pair for a wedding, a festive party or a big night out.
The rule is to match the temperature, not the colour. Pugh's look is soft, pale and sparkling; Cole's is deep, matte and structured. What connects them is a shared level of polish and a single echo — in this case, the silver of her embellishment and shoes against the silver of his tie clip. Nobody looks like they are in costume, and both outfits still read as completely individual.
How to borrow the look
For her side, try a corset or bustier top with a column skirt in a different texture — satin with sequins, or lace with a metallic knit — and keep the palette to one soft pastel plus silver. Let the hair do something slightly undone, like a half-up style with a twist at the crown, so the outfit does not tip into prom.
For his side, swap the default black suit for chocolate brown in a double-breasted cut. Choose a tie in the same family as the suit rather than a contrasting one, add a single silver accent, and, if you are feeling brave, try loafers with white socks for a daytime or creative-dress-code event.
What comes next
With Pugh still on the East of Eden circuit and Cole promoting In the Shadows, there will be more red carpets this season — and, Vogue hopes, more joint appearances. "More to come, we hope!" the magazine signed off. On the evidence of their first outing, Florence Pugh and Finn Cole already understand the most important rule of couple dressing: look like you arrived together, not like you got dressed together.
