One year ago, Matthieu Blazy walked into the Grand Palais as Chanel's untested new artistic director. On Monday night, 5 October, he walked back in as the man behind what WWD called "the year's most successful brand revival." Chanel Spring 2027 was his third ready-to-wear show for the house, and it delivered the two things fashion has come to expect from him: a set people will be screenshotting for weeks, and a single fabric idea that could change how the Chanel suit is worn. That idea has a name — smocked tweed — and it is the reason this collection matters beyond the front-row photos.

Here's the set, the story, the looks worth saving, and how to wear the mood now.

The Set: 95 Birds Under the Glass Roof

Guests looked up first. According to WWD, a flock of 95 illuminated birds hung in mid-flight beneath the steel-and-glass dome. Elle describes them as swifts and swallows, inspired by the migratory birds Blazy watches in Calabria, where he spends his holidays. Below, Reuters (via CNA Luxury) reported a floor of reflective resin in an orange-and-green pattern; WWD notes the set drew on the southern Italian village Blazy visits, home to a river that serves as a sanctuary for migrating birds.

The metaphor was spelled out in Blazy's own words. "Ultimately, Chanel took off, and each step she took led to her being free, like a bird," he said, as quoted by Elle. Per AFP, the house teased the theme with black-and-white David Bailey photographs of feathers, nests and birds' feet.

The Story: Gabrielle Chanel's Many Lives

Blazy framed the 83-look collection as a timeline of Gabrielle Chanel herself — not a costume history, but a layered portrait. "This is not a historical collection; it's a collection about Gabrielle Chanel's layered stories," he told Elle. WWD traced the arc on his mood board, from stiff Edwardian tailoring to borrowed menswear to the tweed suit itself.

He also wanted to show a lighter Chanel. "You see a side of Chanel that is not known, which is the funny side, the joyful side, the fact that she loved to play music, the fact that she was obsessed with wearing costumes," he told WWD. On the soundtrack, house ambassador Nicole Kidman read extracts from Virginia Woolf's Orlando and To the Lighthouse. And because this is Blazy, the finale dropped into Britney Spears's "Gimme More."

Chanel Spring 2027: The Key Looks to Know

1. The white slip that opened the show

Look one was a gauzy, sheer slip — in white rather than the house's famous black, as Elle pointed out — shirred from the bust down with jersey briefs visible beneath, shadow lines of boning and a feathered black-and-white flower blooming at the chest. Model Dyanira Hurbuscher carried Gabrielle Chanel's own 2.55 bag, borrowed from the archives. It set the exposed-lingerie theme that ran through the show.

2. Barely-there skirt suits

Elle Australia described early skirt suits so light and clingy that the skirts "hovering around the lower body" were mere suggestions — some wound with tiny beads, others dusted with miniature knitted flowers.

3. Tiger-print and windowpane tweed

The tweed got wild. Reuters reported tweed loosened into a wide windowpane print with mesh panels, and a red-and-white tiger-print version. WWD spotted a zebra-patterned sleeveless gilet with an hourglass waist and one top-skirt-boots look in three clashing patterns.

4. The answer to the "boxy" critics

Blazy's wide, cropped jackets have frustrated some Chanel loyalists, WWD noted, and this season he answered with body-skimming shapes: clingy semi-sheer knits, a pearl-embroidered corset top with masculine black trousers, and patchwork jackets with corset-style ribbon trims.

5. Jazz Age drop waists

Drop-waist skirts in bouclé, wool and bright knits referenced Chanel's early embrace of the lowered waist, worn with "going-out" tops. Elle singled out a white-and-black drop-waist midi, one of two pieces made with the embroidery house Lesage. Blazy's term for the process: "Chanel-ized."

6. Ballerinas and the sky quartet

Two tutu-skirted dancer looks paired tulle with Edwardian corsetry. BoF's Tim Blanks reports they were modelled on Degas's Little Dancer. Then came a run of looks tracing the sky from dawn to night — Elle Australia describes layered printed-silk gowns, one a blue-and-blush cloud print, the other black and dotted with stars, with Anok Yai closing the sequence in the constellation dress, per Elle.

7. Smocked tweed: the finale fabric

The headline innovation arrived at the end. WWD describes a "next-gen Chanel suit" in a newly developed stretch fabric that blends the look of tweed with the ease of athleticwear. Blazy told BoF that Gabrielle tried a smocked version once, in 1960, before dropping it; his team started with organdy, moved to jacquard, then elasticated it until it stretched. "It's like high performative sporty Chanel," he said. "Every design house is obsessed with the future, the sportswear. We all look at Nike," he added to WWD. As Elle Australia put it, smocked tweed is to Blazy what jersey was to Mademoiselle. The finale closed the loop: Hurbuscher returned with the same archival 2.55, now in a smocked tweed skirt suit.

Shoes, Bags and the Details You'll See Everywhere

Two-tone pumps, remixed: Reuters reported leopard- and tiger-print cap-toes with cream toes, plus baby blue and silver.Logo sandals: chunky styles with a large gold interlocking CC across the front.Quilted bags: black, burgundy and white, with a few zebra-print versions layered with clashing primaries.Swallows on everything: BoF notes swallows and swifts across the accessories, and Emma Balfour carried a small gold birdcage.Shirting: navy linen shirts from the house's Charvet collaboration, per BoF.

Front Row: Who Was There

According to Reuters, Elle and AFP, guests included Dua Lipa, Nicole Kidman, Pedro Pascal, Kristen Wiig, Sandra Hüller and Ayo Edebiri, many wearing Blazy's earlier Chanel collections.

How to Wear the Chanel Spring 2027 Mood Now

No need to wait for the stretch tweed to drop:

Wear your jacket like a T-shirt. Blazy's own line, per Elle: "I like the idea that you wear your Chanel suit like a T-shirt." Try a boxy tweed or bouclé jacket over bare skin or a slip, sleeves pushed up.Show the lingerie. A sheer slip or mesh skirt over visible briefs or a bodysuit is the most direct runway-to-real-life echo of look one.Clash one print. One tiger or zebra shoe against a neutral suit. Three clashing patterns is the advanced level.Drop the waist. A low-slung pleated skirt with a fitted tank does the Jazz Age thing without costume.Raid the archive. "Your old Chanel can still be new," Blazy told Elle. Vintage (or vintage-inspired) quilted bags and cap-toe shoes are the cheapest way into this collection.

Why It Matters

Commercially, Chanel is on a roll: AFP, citing Bloomberg, reports like-for-like revenue up around 16 percent, ahead of peers. Creatively, Blazy is no longer just reintroducing house codes; he's making new ones. If smocked tweed reaches stores the way Blazy describes it, the stiff, keep-it-for-best Chanel suit may finally become something you can run, jump and move in. One year in, his own verdict to WWD was simple: "It's a good start."
